“I thought you sounded very nice,” Mom said that evening, after we’d listened to Rick Rogers and me on the radio. I hadn’t wanted to, but Mom and Dad insisted. Even Scott said he’d like to hear me on the radio.

“You didn’t say very much,” Dad said.

“I only wish you’d be that way here,” Scott said.

“Don’t tease,” Mom said. “Honey, I know you’re disappointed. But it’s not the end of the world.”

If it wasn’t, I wanted to know what was. But there was no point saying so.

The phone rang. “One of Tracy’s fans,” Scott said, getting up to answer it. “Oh, hi,” he said. “It’s Andrea,” he told me with a grimace.

I walked slowly to the phone. Andrea had offered me a few words of comfort at the radio station. I couldn’t think why she was calling.

“I thought you sounded very good on the radio,” she said, after we’d said hello.

“Do you have the album?” she asked.

“Yeah, they gave it to me before I left the radio station,” I said. “Why?”

“I was wondering if you could give me the picture album that’s in it for my scrapbook,” she said.

I had to think for a second; then it came back to me. Inside the record jacket was an eight-page album of pictures of Ross. Andrea had a copy of the album, too, but had decided not to cut the pictures out of the album, to keep it whole.

“Sure,” I said. “I don’t need another album.”

“Thanks,” she said. “I’ll bring the scrapbook over to your house tomorrow morning, and we can put the pictures in together.

“Fine,” I said. “I’ll see you then.”

“You sound so sad,” she said.

“I am,” I said.

“Look, I’m not going to meet him, either,” she said. “At least we won’t be meeting him together.”

I managed a little smile. “Thanks, Andrea,” I said. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

I slumped my way back into the living room when the phone rang again. I stared helplessly at Scott, who went into the kitchen to answer it. “Tracy Newfield Fan Club,” he said. There was a pause. “Oh, sure, Caroline. I’ll get the star.”

I moved back to the kitchen. “Is this going to be going on all night?” Scott asked. “The rest of us might want to get a phone call, too, you know.”

I waved him out of the room while greeting Caroline.

“I heard you on the radio,” she said. “My parents thought you behaved very maturely.”

Just what I needed to hear. “They listened, too?” I said.

“I made them,” she said. “Tracy, what do you want more than anything else in the whole world?”

“To meet Rabbit,” I said. “You know that.”

“What if I told you that could be arranged?”

“Caroline, what are you talking about?” I demanded.

“Remember I was hinting about something at lunch the other day?” she said. “About meeting stars?”

“I remember,” I said.

“I couldn’t say anything then, because it wasn’t definite, but my parents talked to Mr. Thomas and he said they could give the party. He’s a widower, you know.”

“Caroline, what are you saying?”

“Mr.
